World Art Day is celebrated internationally which promotes awareness of creative activities around the world… what a great day!!
It was originally chosen as it is also the birthday of Leonardo Da Vinci, one of the most renowned and celebrated artists who ever lived!! When we think of art we often think of painting or drawing, but art covers so many talents including crafting, making, inventing, music, sculpture, photography and so many more. We are so lucky in this day and age to be encouraged to pursue an interest in the arts. We are surrounded by amazingly talented people who have spent their lives honing their skills, and many who then go on to teach and pass that knowledge onto others. Did you know Da Vinci himself wasn’t just the artist he is best known for, he was also an accomplished draughtsman, engineer, scientist, theorist, sculptor, architect, musician, singer and inventor, an all around creative bloke! It certainly seems that of all the talented greats over the years, they chose such an amazing man to mark the World Art Day date!
Fun Facts about Da Vinci:
Having dug a little deeper there are so many little know facts about this great man, here are some of my favourites: His name wasn’t Leonard Da Vinci… it was ‘Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci’ meaning ‘son of Piero from Vinci’ – the Tuscan village in which he was born. He wrote many of his famous texts backwards… Yes backwards! Something I would really have to think about!! Some say this was because he was left handed and this was the perfect way not to smudge his ink or chalk as he wrote but others say it was just an inventive way to stop others copying or stealing his ideas… genius! He was an inventor… with many inventions being made after his time including an underwater breathing apparatus, a life preserver, a diving bell, an armoured car, a revolving crane, a parachute, a pulley, a method to consolidate solar power (wow), water-powered mills and single span bridges!! He hated Michelangelo… He said that his muscled figures looked like ‘bags of walnuts and bunches of radishes’ (rude) The Mona Lisa is SO small… Undoubtedly one of Da Vinci’s most famous paintings, The Mona Lisa, who hangs proudly on display at The Louvre’s Grand Gallery is only 30 inches tall… that’s about the same size as a medium sized penguin!!  But don’t let her size fool you, she is worth $850 million and is surrounded by bullet proof glass!!
